NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, sponsors of the annual Lott IMACT Trophy, announced Wednesday that Fresno State free safety Derron Smith is a finalist for its award.
Smith is the only player from the Mountain West to make the list and is one of two players named quarterfinalists that do not come from a school in a BCS conference. The other is BYU linebacker Kyle Van Noy.
Smith, who was named the Mountain West Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, has helped lead the Bulldogs to a No. 15 national ranking after a 6-0 start to the season. The team captain has 35 tackles on the year, 3.5 tackles for a loss, two sacks, three pass breakups and one quarterback hurry. Addionally, his three interceptions lead the team.
For his career, Smith is tied for ninth nationally among active career interception leaders with 10 in 35 career games.
Named after Pro Football Hall of Fame member, Ronnie Lott, The Lott IMPACT Trophy is awarded to college football's Defensive IMPACT Player of the Year. Founded in 2004 by The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, The Lott Trophy is the first and only college football award to equally recognize athletic performance and the personal character attributes of the player. The Lott Trophy is given to the player who exhibits the same characteristics Lott embodied during his distinguished career: Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity.
Eight semifinalists for the award will be announced Nov. 13, four finalists will be announced Nov. 27 and the winner at the 10th annual Lott IMPACT Trophy Banquet Dec. 8 at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach. The university of the winner will receive $25,000 for its general scholarship fund and each of the other finalists will receive $5,000 for their schools' general scholarship fund.
