FRESNO, Calif. - Band Day has become a tradition for the Bulldog Marching Band. This year they will be joined in their halftime performance by 21 high school bands from across the Central Valley.
Band Day will give Bulldog football fans a new and exciting halftime show to look forward to this Saturday as the `Dogs take on Hawaii.
"We are doing classic rock hits from 1973, it was a great year for classic rock, there are some great tunes, it's going to look very colorful," said band director Dr. David Fullmar. "The last tune we play is a Lynyrd Skynyrd piece, Free Bird. We are going to feature one of our band members who is also a very fine guitarist. There will be some fun things, some surprises."
This will be the first Band Day in Fresno for Dr. Fullmar, who joined the Fresno State Bulldog Band this past summer. Prior to his time at Fresno State, Fullmar taught in Utah for the 25 years, and was the previous assistant band director at Brigham Young University for the last four years. A Southern California native, Fullmar is glad to be back in California and to get back to his roots.
"This is my first year at Fresno State, in a way it's like coming home since I'm from California," said Fullmar. "It's been a long time since I've lived here."
The Bulldog Marching Band is the heart of Bulldog pride during football games. Fullmar wants to continue the traditions of the Bulldog Marching Band, while also adding new surprises to keep the crowd involved.
"We are there to help the team get the W, and we hope that we have an impact on the crowd," said Fullmar. "We think that's a really important part of our function. We try to do things that are going to involve everyone at the game, not just the band members, but everyone in attendance."
Band Day is a great opportunity for the Valley's high school community to feel more connected to Fresno State. Along side the Bulldog Marching Band, 1,400 high school students will be performing at halftime of the football game this weekend as the `Dogs take on Hawaii.
"They are coming and they are sharing the halftime with us, so it will look like a big patchwork quilt," said Fullmar.
