Volek Named Team MVP at Football Awards Banquet

    FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's record setting quarterback Billy Volek was named team MVP for the 1999 season in a vote conducted by his teammates. The award was presented at the team awards banquet tonight at the Radisson Convention Center.

    Volek, a senior from Fresno, Calif., posted a record-setting season in 1999 and guided the Bulldogs to an 8-4 record, a WAC championship and berth in the EA Sports Las Vegas Bowl. Volek completed 235 of 355 passes for 2,559 yards and 30 touchdowns. He threw only three interceptions all season. He ranks third in the NCAA in touchdown passes and sixth in passing efficiency, 154.2.

    The Bulldogs will play a team from the Mountain West Conference in the EA Sports Las Vegas Bowl Dec. 18.

    "This is the first banquet I've been at when we still had a game to play," said head coach Pat Hill. "Tonight is a night when we celebrate the players and the seniors. This is their night."

    Special Team Player of the Year: Jeff Hanna

    Director's Academic Award: Giachino Chiaramonte

    Coach's Award: Rasheed Saafir, Jeromy Blackwell

    Most Inspirational Player (tie): Chad Ede, Alan Harper
