The EA SPORTS Las Vegas Bowl Announces Fresno State as the WAC Representative

    Nov. 20, 1999

LAS VEGAS - Today, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA), the game's co-title sponsor, announced that Fresno State, the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) co-champion, has accepted a bid to play in the EA SPORTS Las Vegas Bowl on Saturday, December 18. The Bulldogs will face a yet-to-be-determined representative from the Mountain West Conference (MWC).

"We are thrilled to have Fresno State as a representative in the EA SPORTS Las Vegas Bowl," said Rossi Ralenkotter, vice president of marketing for the LVCVA. "We have the opportunity to host an excellent Bulldog team, and we're excited about the prospects for December 18. We eagerly anticipate the arrival of the team and fans into Las Vegas for a one-of-a-kind bowl experience," he added.

With a 63-12 victory over San Jose State at Bulldog Stadium, Fresno State (8-4/5-2) became the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) co-champion. The eight wins registered by Fresno State this season are the most the Bulldogs have recorded since the 1993 season when they finished at 8-4 and went to the Aloha Bowl. Fresno State's fans, known as the Red Wave, have a great tradition of traveling for bowl games, including an amazing 28,000 fans at the 1992 Freedom Bowl.

"We are thrilled to accept the invitation for the EA Sports Las Vegas Bowl," said Fresno State Athletic Director Al Bohl. "Our fans always enjoy going to Las Vegas, and I expect the Red Wave to take over the Las Vegas 'Strip'. This has been a great year for our football program and our fans and we are looking forward to the bowl game."

"Our goal at the beginning of the season was to win the WAC and go to the Las Vegas Bowl," said Fresno State Head Football Coach Pat Hill. "This is a great accomplishment by a team of true warriors. We have battled through some injuries and a tough schedule but our guys hung tough and won a championship. Our football team is excited about going to Las Vegas."

The EA SPORTS Las Vegas Bowl, which offers a payout of $750,000 per team, will be played in a favorable time slot. The game will be televised live on ESPN2 beginning at 3:00 p.m. (PST). The Bulldogs' opponent for college football's first Division I-A bowl game of 1999 will be the second selection from the MWC.

"Knowing that the EA SPORTS Las Vegas Bowl would feature the conference champion, the Selection Committee has paid close attention to the Bulldogs," said Roy Woofter, Chairman of the Selection Committee. "Fresno State has put together a solid season, and they will be an outstanding representative of the Western Athletic Conference. With the excitement and football tradition at Fresno State, we believe they will attract many fans to Las Vegas on December 18."

When Fresno State arrives for the EA SPORTS Las Vegas Bowl, the players, coaches, administrators, and fans will be able to enjoy a complete bowl experience. As part of Bowl Week, the EA SPORTS Las Vegas Bowl will host events at some of the city's most exciting attractions. The events include the Welcome Reception at the All-American SportPark, Kickoff Luncheon at the MGM Grand, and the Pep Rally and Buffet Bowl at the Golden Nugget/Fremont Street Experience. These activities will be set against the backdrop of Las Vegas, a world-renowned event and resort destination that attracts more than 30.6 million visitors per year.
