Football Selected to Play in Silicon Valley Football Classic
Dec. 3, 2000
FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's football team will be playing in a bowl game for the second consecutive season as the Bulldogs received an invitation to play in the inaugural Silicon Valley Football Classic in San Jose, Calif., on Dec. 31. The announcement was made today by Silicon Valley Football Classic Executive Director Chuck Shelton.
The Bulldogs will play Air Force (8-3), which finished second in the Mountain West Conference. The Falcons beat MWC champion No. Colorado State and lost to No. Notre Dame in overtime. They are coached by Fisher DeBerry, who has guided Air Force to 11 bowl games in his 16 seasons at the Academy. The Falcons are ranked No. 25 in the Fox Sports.com college football poll.
"We are thrilled with this invitation," said Athletics Director Al Bohl. "Fresno State fans have a great tradition of traveling and I know our fans are going to be excited to go to San Jose to play in a bowl game. I would expect that because of the success of our football team this season and with an opponent the caliber of Air Force, we would have more than 15,000 fans at Spartan Stadium for the game. There are going to be a lot great events planned around the bowl game to make for a very exciting New Year's Eve weekend."
The Bulldogs, who finished with the second-best record in the WAC at 6-2, were 7-4 overall and are receiving votes in the USA Today/ESPN poll. All four of Fresno State's losses were to teams who earned bowl invitations this season (Ohio State, Outback Bowl, UCLA, Sun Bowl, UTEP, Humanitarian Bowl, TCU, Mobile, Ala., Bowl).
"Air Force is an outstanding team and they are coached by one of the finest football coaches in the country in Fisher DeBerry," said head coach Pat Hill, who is guiding his team to a bowl for the second consecutive season. "Air Force has a great football tradition and has played well in bowl games under DeBerry. They beat Washington two years ago in the Aloha Bowl. We are very excited about the opportunity to play them in the first-ever Silicon Valley Football Classic."
Silicon Valley Football Classic tickets in all price ranges will be available beginning Monday morning at the Bulldog Ticket Office or at the Bulldog Shop. Tickets can also be ordered by calling (559) 278-DOGS. Beginning Monday morning, bowl tickets will be available online at www.gobulldogs.com. Ticket prices range from $20 to $60.
