FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State head coach Pat Hill handed out the awards for the 2004 football season at the annual football awards banquet held at the Fresno Convention Center in downtown Fresno Sunday afternoon. Senior offensive tackle Logan Mankins was selected the team's Most Valuable Player in voting by the Bulldog players. Nearly 600 fans attended the function.
Mankins, a first-team All-Western Athletic Conference selection, has become one of the best linemen in Fresno State history during his stellar career. During his senior season, he was one of the premier lineman in the nation and has been selected to play in the East-West Shrine game and the Senior Bowl. Mankins has nearly 80 pancake blocks for the season and graded out higher then 90% for the entire season, a coaching grade given out. That percentage is 10% higher than the normal standard for offensive line play. He is the first Bulldog offensive lineman to ever win the award.
Hill credited the senior class of 16 players for their four straight bowl appearances and for producing a 37-16 overall record
"For an offensive lineman to t he win the Bulldog MVP is unprecedented," said Hill. "That tells you the type of player Logan Mankins is and the type of respect he has among his teammates. I couldn't be happier for a player who has worked so hard to become, what I think, is one of the best linemen in the nation. This has been a very special year and we can make it ever more special on Dec. 27 with a win over Virginia, a nationally ranked team, in the bowl game."
