'Dogs Tied For Third

FRESNO, Calif.- The Fresno State men's golf team hosted the first two rounds of the 46th Annual Fresno Lexus Classic at Belmont Country Club. The Bulldogs shot 290-300 - 590 in the first 36 holes on Monday to place in a tie for third place out of the 20-team field. The Bulldogs will tee off of hole one beginning at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.
The `Dogs got off to a hot start and fired on all cylinders by shooting a first round score of 290, which was the lowest of the first round scores and second lowest round of the day.
Fresno State was atop of the leaderboard after the first round, but Washington fired a phenomenal second round 285 to jump in the lead along with UC Davis (584) and their late surge. BYU also finished the day tied for third shooting 14-over par 590. The Bulldogs and BYU are six strokes behind the leaders. San Diego State posted a two round total of 592 to round off the top five of the field.
"Todd had a great day," said head coach Mike Watney. "He stepped up and that's what good players do."
Fresno State's leader was junior Todd Angel with 2-under 142. Angel was in the lead after having a low round of 69 in the first round. The second round Angel shot a 73 to tie for third place at the end of the first day.
"I played pretty solid today," said Angel. "It feels great to perform at a level that I know that I am capable of competing at. I grew up playing here and I feel really confident and comfortable at this course."
Grant Doverspike tied for 27th with a 5-over par 149. Sophomores Michael Gideon and Bryan Hogan both tied for 36th place with 6-over 148. Freshman Bahvik Patel finished the day 11-over par 155 to tie for 68th.
Brain Sunker, Brad Wyatt and Cory Bischel are all competing as individuals. Sunker finished the day tied for 58thshooting a total of 153. Wyatt(161)tied for 92nd place and Bischel(170)finished in 104.
"Considering the weather conditions, I am proud of these guys, said Coach Watney. "We sure did not plan for the weather or practice in anything like it during the last two weeks. Overall, Im pleased."
The individual leader is Phil Huffman who is playing for UC Davis .Huffman (139) shot even par in the first round, he then carded a second round 67, which was the lowest of the day. Michael Im of UC Irvine is two strokes behind with 141 and Todd Angel is three strokes back of the leader.
"Join the State - Fresno State!" The third and final round of the Fresno State Lexus Golf Classic will be Tuesday March 11 at the Belmont Country Club.
