FRESNO, Calif. -- The annual Fresno State Classic commenced on Monday, March 10 welcomed by high winds throughout day one of the two-day tournament.
As the day continued, tough winds pierced the course beginning in the late morning and continuing throughout the evening.
The Bulldogs took advantage of playing on their home course to sit in a tie for 9th place at the end of round one. Leading the 'Dogs was Keenan Nelson who fired three-over par, 74 to sit in a tie for 21st place. Trailing Nelson by one stroke was Nate Jessup, Michael Pugh, and Troix Tonkham who carded four-over par, 75 to sit in a tie for 33rd place.
As the winds progressed into round two, the Bulldogs fought to move up the leaderboard, but fell a few strokes short. Jessup (75-77) and Nelson (75-77) tied for 33rd place at 10-over par, 152 (74-78). Pugh (75-79) and Tonkham (75-79) fell into a tie for 45th place and finished the day at 12-over par, 154.
"The team played hard today, but unfortunately the wind took control of their game during round two," head coach Chad Spencer said. "Tomorrow is a new day though and the team is ready to finish the tournament strong."
The Bulldogs finished the day in a tie for 12th place among the 14-field team. The 'Dogs recorded 44-over par, 612 (299-313) and made 30 birdies and one eagle.
Day one resulted in a battle for the lead between Nevada, UC Santa Barbara and BYU. The No. 1 position on the leaderboard was taken by the Wolf Pack after carding 16-over par, 584 (290-294). UC Santa Barbara (288-298) and BYU (290-296) tied for second place at 18-over par, 586.
Camden Price of Cal Poly took the individual lead at two-under par, 140 (70-70). Cory McElyea of San Francisco sits one stroke behind Price at one-under par, 141 (68-73).
Day two of the Fresno State Classic will begin on Tuesday, March 11 with tee times set to begin at 8 a.m.
