FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's golf team is in third place out of seven teams after the first round of competition at the Winchester Classic in Meadow Vista, Calif. The tournament, co-hosted by UC Davis and Nevada, is held at the 7,144-yard, par-72 Winchester Golf Club.

The Bulldogs recorded an opening round 7-over, 295 and are only five shots away from first place UC Davis (+2, 290). Fellow WAC teams Idaho (+8, 296) and Nevada (+11, 299) are one and four strokes behind the 'Dogs, respectively.

Nate Jessup, a sophomore from Springville, Calif., led the way for Fresno State with an even-par, 72 to sit in a tie for seventh place.

Brian Sunker and Jack Mulroy are both tied for 11th after carding a 2-over, 74. Rufie Fessler is one shot behind Sunker and Mulroy at 3-over, 74 and tied for 17th.

Freshman Keenan Nelson ended the first day in a tie for 22nd at 4-over 76 while Johnny Partridge, who is participating as an individual, sits in a tie for 40th at 10-over, 82.

Kevin Lucas of Nevada holds the individual lead at 4-under, 68 with Matt Seriman of UC Davis and Idaho's Jarred Bossio right behind at 3-under, 69.

The Bulldogs return to action Saturday to compete in the second round of the Winchester Classic with tee times scheduled for 8 a.m. PST.
