FRESNO, Calif. - After starting the second round of the Winchester Classic in third place, the Fresno State men's golf team fired a 2-over, 290 to take a 10-shot lead going into the final day of competition Sunday.Mike Watney said. "I am proud of the guys and how they played today considering the conditions."
The Bulldogs were behind UC Davis and Sacramento State but outshot them by 15 and 17, respectively, to move into their first lead of a tournament all season. The 'Dogs sit at 9-over, 585 while second place UC Davis is at 19-over, 595.
Junior Rufie Fessler fired a 3-under, 69, the lowest round on the day, to move up 14 positions and into a tie for third place at even-par (75-69--144). He is only three strokes behind the leader Kevin Lucas of Nevada and two behind Idaho's Jarred Bossio for second.
Brian Sunker, a senior from Valencia, Calif., moved six spots with an even-par, 72 to tie for fifth at 2-over (74-72--146). Nate Jessup stayed tied for seventh at 3-over (72-75--147) after carding a 75 during the second round.
Jack Mulroy also recorded a 3-over, 75 to sit in a tie for 13th at 5-over (74-75--149) while Keenan Nelson is one stroke behind Mulroy at 6-over (76-74--150) and in a tie for 15th. All of the 'Dogs are in the top 15 going into the final round of the tournament.
Johnny Partridge, who is participating as an individual, shot a 12-over, 84 and is in 40th place at 22-over (82-84--166).
The Bulldogs look to hold onto the lead Sunday as they compete in the final round of the Winchester Classic with tee times scheduled for 8 a.m. PST.
"We have the pressure of sleeping in the lead and seeing if we can play when we are extra nervous," Watney concluded. "We are looking forward to it."
