FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's golf team held onto the lead during the final round of the Winchester Classic to claim the team title with a 10-over, 874. This is not only the Bulldogs first tournament victory of the season but it's their first win since the San Marcos Invitational in February of 2008.
The 'Dogs carded a 3-over, 147 on the front nine but, for the second day in a row, caught fire on the back nine and recorded a 2-under, 142 to finish the final round at 1-over, 289.
Sophomore Nate Jessup fired a 2-under, 70 to move into a career-best second place tie at 1-over (72-75-70--217). Jessup was only one stroke away from first place Jarred Bossio from Idaho (69-73-74--216, E).
Senior Brian Sunker recorded a season-best fifth place finish with a 3-over, 219 (74-72-73). Jack Mulroy and Keenan Nelson also claimed season-bests by tying for 13th and 16th, respectively. Sunker, Mulroy and Nelson all recorded a 1-over, 73 during the final round.
Mulroy, playing with a new driver because he broke his other one the day before, finished at 6-over, 222 (74-75-73), while Nelson came in at 7-over, 223 (76-74-73).
Rufie Fessler, a junior from Bakersfield, Calif., recorded his second top 10 finish of the season by tying for 10th at 5-over, 221 (75-69-77).
"This was a solid team effort," head coach Mike Watney said. "Everyone came within six strokes of each other. This is the perfect way to be playing right before the WAC Championship."
Johnny Partridge, who was competing as an individual, shot a 4-over, 76 to move into 39th place (82-84-76--242, +26).
The Bulldogs will compete in the WAC Championship on April 30-May 2 at Rio Secco Golf Club in Henderson Nevada. The winner will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Regional.
