"It was a very good day for us," head coach Mike Watney said. "The key for us is consistency and we had a tremendous finish from almost everyone."

The finish Watney is referring to included eagles by juniors Rufie Fessler and Jack Mulroy on the par-5, 516-yard 17th and a hole-in-one by senior Brian Sunker on the par-3, 189-yard 15th. The ace is Sunker's first of his career.

Sunker, a native of Valencia, Calif., was 5-over going into the 15th, but the hole-in-one along with a birdie on the 17th brought his score down to 2-over, 74 and into a tie for 18th place.

Fessler finished birdie-eagle-par to record a 2-under, 34 on the back-nine. He is currently tied for ninth at even-par, 72.

Mulroy used a bogey-free front-nine which included a birdie on the par-5 8th to sit alone in 8th place at 1-under, 71.

The top performer on the day for the 'Dogs was sophomore Nate Jessup who is in a four-way tie for fourth at 2-under, 70. Jessup fired a 2-under, 34 on the front-nine and sank a birdie on the 11th to go 14 holes of bogey-free golf. He hit all 18 greens in regulation.

Redshirt freshman Keenan Nelson shot a 10-over, 82 to sit in 38th after the first round.

Sean McMullen of Idaho holds the individual lead after firing a 7-under, 65 and Tanner Highman of Utah State is three strokes behind at 4-under, 68.

The three-day tournament is held at the 7,313-yard, par-72 Rio Secco Golf Club in Henderson, Nev.

The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday to compete in the second round of the WAC Championship with the first 'Dog scheduled to tee off at 9 a.m. PST.

"We did a lot of good things to bring it into the clubhouse," Watney concluded. "We are looking forward to tomorrow and hope it is as good as the second round of the Winchester Classic."
