FRESNO, Calif. - The 2011-12 season came to an end for the Fresno State men's golf team as they concluded the WAC Tournament on Wednesday at Rio Secco Golf Club in Henderson, Nev. with a 10-over, 298 to finish in third place at 22-over (287-301-298--886).

"We didn't have one player catch fire but it was a solid effort," head coach Mike Watney said. "We started off horrendously but fought back to end well."

The Bulldogs started the day only seven strokes behind first place San Jose State but the Spartans held their ground with a 7-over, 295 to claim the tournament title at 12-over for their fourth win of the year.

A small victory for the 'Dogs came on the seventh hole where they shot three birdies to record a 3-under after recording a 7-over on Tuesday.

Brian Sunker, playing in the final tournament of his collegiate career, carded a final round even-par, 72 which was the second-lowest score on the day. The low round moved him up 10 positions into a tie for 10th at 6-over (74-76-72--222).

The bigger story regarding Sunker's even-par was it dropped his scoring average down to 75.9 which makes him eligible for the All-America Scholar award. To qualify, an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70-percent of his team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke-average under 76.0 and must be of high moral character and in good standing at their Division I college or university. Nate Jessup finished in the top spot for the 'Dogs for the second tournament in a row by tying for eighth at 5-over (70-74-77--221). This marked Jessup second top 10 finish of the season.

The third Bulldog to place in the top 10 was Jack Mulroy who joined Sunker in a tie for 10th at 6-over (71-76-75--222). Mulroy carded three birdies, including one on the par-4, 398-yard 16th, to record a 3-over, 75 on the day.

Rufie Fessler also shot a 3-over, 75 and tied for 14th at 8-over (72-77-75--224) while Keenan Nelson finished in 31st at 17-over (82-75-76--233).

Jay Myers of San Jose State won the individual title after birding the first sudden death playoff hole to defeat New Mexico State's Justin Shin.

At the conclusion of the tournament, the all-WAC teams and top awards were announced which were voted on by the eight WAC head coaches.
