Doverspike Climbs up The Leaderboard

FRESNO, Calif. - After two rounds of the 2009 NCAA Division I Men's Golf West Regional Championships that is being contested at the par-72, 6,849-yard Lake Merced Golf Club, Grant Doverspike drastically jumped up the leaderboard. Doverspike registered a 68 in the second round to give him a 143 36-hole total. The 143 puts him at 1-under par for the tourney. Doverspike began the day in a tie for 53. He recorded six birdies and an eagle on the day to sit in a seven-way tie for 20th place. Doverspike, who is the No. 1 seeded individual competitor for this region is just four strokes back of the individual competitor leader, Brady Johnson of BYU. "From the tee, Grant shot beautifully," said head coach Mike Watney. "His tee shots put him in great shape. Great players step up and Grant did exactly what he needed to do to put his self in a good position for tomorrow." Freshman, Bhavik Patel, started the day tied for 37th. He fired a 72 today to move up two spots and finish tied for 35th. After two rounds Patel posted a 36-hole total of 1-over par 145. Arizona State received three bogey-free rounds en route to a second round total of 13-under par 275 and holds a six-shot lead after two rounds. Jesper Kennegard (68), Chan Kim (67) and Scott Pinkney (70) combined to shoot 11-under par without a bogey on Friday to help the Sun Devils to a 36-hole total of 22-under par 554. Kennegard opened the second round in second place and shot a 4-under 68 today to lead the field with a 10-under par 134. The Arizona State sophomore holds a three-shot lead Matthew Giles of USC, who is in second place with a 7-under par score of 137. The 54-hole tournament concludes on Saturday with the first tee time set for 8:30 a.m. The top five teams, along with the top individual not on a qualifying team, advance to the NCAA Championships scheduled for May 26-30 at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Patel will tee off at 9:10 a.m. and following at 9:10 a.m. will be Doverspike. Arizona State is seeking its fourth outright title and first since 2001.
