    FRESNO, Calif.- The third round of the 2009 NCAA Division I Men's Golf West Regional Championships is in the books and Grant Doverspike and Bhavik Patel had stellar individual performances.

    Doverspike finished tied for 12th and just three strokes back from advancing to the NCAA Championships in Toledo. BYU's Brady Johnson shot a final round 3-under par 69 to tiefor fifth place with an 8-under 208 and claim the individual spot into the NCAA Championships.

    After a tough first round the WAC Player of The Year bounced back and recorded back-to-back 68's to slowly creep up the leaderboard.

    "I am very proud of Grant," said head Coach Mike Watney. "He played two great rounds of golf after having a tough first round."

    Doverspike recorded a total of 13 birdies and an eagle for the tournament.

    Patel shot a 71 in the final round to post a 54-hole total of 216. In the final nine hole Patel shot two eagles to finish at even par.

    "For a freshman and it being his first NCAA tournament, Bhavik played solid golf," said Watney.

    "Both of these guys are retuning next year and im already looking forward to another great year in golf," said Watney.

    Of the individuals not on a regional qualifying team, Doverspike and Patel placed second and third, respectively.

    Arizona State finished the 54-hole tournament at 36-under par 828 to register a nine-shot victory over Oregon, which totaled a 27-under par score of 837. Texas A&M posted a tournament-best score of 15-under par 273 to finish third with a 24-under par total of 840.

    San Diego (849) and USC (853) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, to earn the region's final two spots into the NCAA Championships scheduled for May 26-30 at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.

    Arizona State, which will be making its 16th NCAA Championship appearance since 1993, won its fourth outright title and first since 2001. The victory also marks the sixth time that the Sun Devils have won or shared a regional championship.
