TEMPE, Ariz.-- In round one of competition at the Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. on Thursday, May 16, senior Rufie Fessler carded a two-under score of 68 - placing him only four strokes from first place and owning the leading score for individuals not on a team ranked in the top five of the Regional.
The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.
"Rufie has a very solid round today," head coach Mike Watney said. "I was very impressed with his cool and composure on a difficult course against very good competition."
Fessler, the only Bulldog to represent Fresno State at the three-day tournament, sits in an eleven-way tie for sixth place out of the 75-player field.
Fessler's two-under par round is his third best round of the season. He fired a 65 in round two of competition at the Alister Mackenzie Invitational in the fall and a 67 in round one of The Prestige in the spring.
Fessler leads the tournament with five birdies along with Greg Eason of UCF and Stephen Behr of Clemon who made six birdies.
"Today I was very fortunate that my short game was on because I only hit six greens or so," Fessler said. "I'm feeling good though, so I think if I put a good day off the tee together with my short game I can see some better results."
Pontus Widegren of UCLA and Dustin Korte of Austin Peay State are tied as tournament leaders at six-under par, 64.
Round two of competition tees off Friday, May 17 at 7:30 a.m. Fessler will tee off at 9:34 a.m. from the tenth hole with Erik Oja of Arizona and Harley Abrams of Lehigh University. Follow Fessler on www.golfstat.com and check www.gobulldogs.com for the recap.
