    FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State (287-288 - 575) with a new young team takes fifth out of 14 teams in its first tournament of the season at the Virginia Country Club in Long Beach, Calif. Saint Mary's and University of Arkansas shot 569 to tie for first.

    "I am very proud of them tonight," said head coach Mike Watney. "I am very pleased with the consistency of the game. It puts us in a pretty good position after the first day."

    Matt Shaw and Matt Ryan shot a 1-over par to get a total score of 143 to tie for 12th. Grant Doverspike tied for 19th after shooting rounds of 71-73 - 144. Brad Wyatt (76-73 - 149) shot a 7-over par to tie in 50th. Todd Angel (72-78 - 150) shot one behind Wyatt to tie for 56th.

    "For four guys, this was their first day of competition in division one golf and that is a tremendously exciting time in a person's life," said coach Watney. "I saw some nervousness but I saw some real toughness too."

    The final round of the Del Walker Intercollegiate begins with a 7:20 a.m. tee time at the Virginia Country Club in Long Beach, Calif. Live scoring and results are available at www.golfstat.com.
