    FRESNO, Calif. - The men and women's Fresno State golf team both participated in the 2007 Giustina Memorial Classic at the Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore. Both teams competed separately against the ten other teams and also had a combined score. The Bulldogs combined score is 617-566 - 1183 to put them tied for fifth place among the ten other schools after two rounds.

    The men's golf team (286-280 - 566) is tied for third place with Portland. The Bulldogs kicked off their 2007-08 season today finishing the day 10-under par. Oregon State is currently in first place with 557 followed by Oregon with 562. UC Irvine is in fifth with 567.

    Matt Ryan led the men's line-up with a 71-69 - 140 to finish tied for eighth after two rounds. Brad Wyatt finished a stroke behind with a 71-70 -141 to tie for 10th. Todd Angel tied for 16th place with 72-71 - 143. Grant Doverspike (76--70 - 146) tied for 29th and true freshman Michael Gideon (72-78 - 150) tied for 38th.

    "Between the first and second round we do not have to count any round over par," said head coach Mike Watney. "So right there is a nice turnaround from last year. I'm proud of the guys for doing so well on the first day of the year. Michael Gideon had a solid first round as a true freshman."

    The women's (299-318 - 617/+41) golf team are in eighth place out of ten teams. Washington is the women's current leader with a two round combined score of 594. Oregon State is five strokes behind with 599 followed by UC Irvine (601), Oregon (603), and UC Riverside (608) to round out the top five.

    Laura Luethke is leading the way for the women's team tied for 11th place with 71-79 - 150. Taylor Siebert is tied for 20th with 74-79 - 153. Pia Escandon (74-80 - 154) is tied for 24th followed by Hali Coppin (80-80 - 160) who is tied for 35th and Tiffany Derksen (81-84 - 165) who is tied for 40th.

    Tee time for the third round on Tuesday is set for 7:45 a.m. At the conclusion of the Classic there will be a brief presentation of awards held for individual men's and women's medalists as well as a combined award.
