FRESNO, Calif. -- In his first tournament of the 2013-14 season, sophomore Troix Tonkham took a five-stroke lead among the Bulldogs to sit in the top ten of the 104-player St. Mary's Invitational.
Tonkham made eight birdies and fired 71-73 for a total score of 144 over the first two rounds of play. Tonkham sits only four strokes behind the tournament leader.
Teeing off its first tournament of the fall season on Monday, Sept. 23, the Fresno State men's golf team recorded 18-over par, 594 (300-294) to sit only six strokes from second place.
"We made pretty solid today," head coach Chad Spencer said. "This team is very tough and resilient. We are only six behind second and are still in the hunt for a strong finish."
In round two the Bulldogs decreased their round one score by six strokes after making 15 birdies to place them in a two-way tie for ninth place.
The two-day tournament hosted by St. Mary's College is held at the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses in Monterey, Calif. Day two of the St. Mary's Invitational will commence Tuesday, Sept. 24 with a shotgun start set for 8 a.m.
No. 1 Cal leads the tournament with six-under par, 570 (288-282) and Grant Forrest of San Diego holds the individual lead at four-under par, 140 (71-69).
