FRESNO, Calif. -- Leading the Fresno State men's golf team, sophomore Troix Tonkham fired one-over par, 217 (73-71-73) to finish the St. Mary's Invitational in a two-way tie for sixth place.
Competing among a field of 104 players Tonkham held onto his top-ten finish through the final two rounds of play to keep his name on the leaderboard.
Trailing Tonkham was junior Keenan Nelson. In round three Nelson moved from his day one tie for 67th place to finish the tournament in the top 25.
In round three Nelson carded ten strokes less than his round two score to move him 42 positions up the leaderboard. On the tournament, Nelson made ten birdies and recorded seven-over par, 223 (75-79-69) to finish in a tie for 25th.
The Bulldogs teed off their first tournament of the fall season at the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses in Monterey, Calif.
Competing against 18 other teams over two days of play, the Bulldogs carded 26-over par, 890 (300-294-299) to record a tie for sixth place.
Cal took the tournament title at ten-under par, 854 (288-282-284) and Grant Forrest of San Diego took the individual title at seven-under par, 209 (71-69-69).
The Bulldogs face their next tournament on Oct. 14-15 in Sonoma, Calif. at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational hosted by No. 1 Cal.
