    FRESNO, Calif. --

The Fresno State men's golf team concluded its first tournament of the season in fourth place out of 15 teams on Tuesday in Monterey, Calif.

Round three of the St. Mary's College Invitational was delayed 15 minutes due to fog; however, the sun eventually shined and the teams played in about 60-degree weather.

The 'Dogs played round three at Bayonet golf course where they shot 14 over par (289-288-301--878) and slid from their second place position yesterday.

"It was a tough day for us and we didn't play great," head coach Mike Watney said. "Actually, it was disappointing how we played today after yesterday. I'm not thrilled that three teams beat us, however I am pretty happy with the eleven teams we did beat and I saw a lot of good things that we can build on."

Bulldog Nate Jessup made the top ten of the 84-player tournament as well as freshman Troix Tonkham, who played in his first collegiate tournament. Another leading Bulldog was Rufie Fessler who placed in the top 20.

Jessup finished the tournament even par (74-68-74--216) in a tie for eighth place. Jessup shot a total of 13 birdies throughout the two-day tournament.

Following Jessup was Tonkham who shot a total of 12 birdies throughout the tournament and finished in a tie for tenth with one over par (72-71-74--217).

"Troix Tonkham is a heck of a good freshmen and I think he is going to be a solid addition to our lineup," Watney said.

The Bulldogs have returned to Fresno and will keep practicing and keep pushing as they try and reach the number one spot in the next tournament.

"It was only our first tournament," Watney said. "We are for sure going to get better once we get a little more experience under our belt. It wasn't great but it was pretty darn good and I am happy that this step in our season showed some promise."

The 'Dogs will travel to Fairfax, Calif. for their next tournament on Oct.15-16 where they will compete in the Alister MacKenzie Invitational.
