Fresno, Calif. --After day one of the No. 1 Cal hosted Alister MacKenzie Invitational, the Fresno State men's golf team sits in 7th place of 16 teams.

The Bulldogs teed off the two-day tournament on Oct. 15 in Fairfax, Calif. and shot seven under par for a total score of 561 (289-272).

The 'Dogs came back in the second round from a high first round score as they played on the par-71, 6, 119-yard course at Meadow Club. The Bulldogs faced many top ranked schools on the field including Oregon State, San Diego State, UC Davis and Cal.

"I would like to think that how we played the second round demonstrates how our team is, but we need to be more consistent," head coach Mike Watney said. "At this point, we are in seventh place and two strokes out of third. It is a two-team race and those two teams are playing spectacular. We are challenged to finish in third or at least top five. We are very close to the top three right now and that is our goal."

Rufie Fessler shot six under par for a total score of 136 (71-65). Fessler made eight birdies throughout round one and two and is tied for 7th in the 79-player tournament.

"Rufie played very well," Watney said. "He has played like that in practice and it was good to see him play like that in a tournament."

Troix Tonkham also made eight birdies today and made an eagle on hole one during the first round. Tonkham shot three under par (70-69--139) and sits in a tie for 17th place.

Jack Mulroy is leading the team with 10 birdies. Mulroy shot two under par (72-68--140) and sits in a tie for 24th place.

"Jack Mulroy had a good and solid day," Watney said. "He had a big turn around from the last tournament so we are happy to see that. His parents are visiting from London, so it is really great for them to see him play well."
