FRESNO, Calif. -- After three days of competition at the Warrior Wave Intercollegiate, the Bulldogs finished in 8th place out of 16 teams. The Fresno State men's golf team averaged 73.16 on the tough, windy, par-72, 7,223-yard Makai Golf Club at Princeville..
Baylor shot 18 under par (287-280-279--846) and took the tournament title. Albin Choi from North Carolina State took the individual title and finished ten under par (69-68-69--206).
Bulldog Nate Jessup closed with a strong 69 to finish in a tie for 18th place. Jessup made a total of 12 birdies throughout the three-day tournament. This was Nate's third top-21 finish in the four fall tournaments, including one top-10 finish.
Second among the Bulldogs was freshman Troix Tonkham who shot 76-71-75=222 for a 35th place finish in the 79-player field. Other Bulldog results included Jack Mulroy 77-72-74--223 (45th), Rufie Fessler 76-73-75--224 (50th), and Rich Gilkey 69-83-77--229 (65th).
Coach Mike Watney was optimistic about his players after the fall season. "They are good guys with excellent attitudes and they are hard workers," head coach Mike Watney said. "Considering that we had three new golfers in the lineup, the results were pretty good. I know we have a huge upside because we've shown it in our qualifiers with four different Bulldogs shooting 65 or better. I have high hopes for these guys. For Nate and Rufie to average less than 72 is awesome and how about that freshman Troix! To be averaging 72 is a better average than PGA Tour Star Nick Watney had during the fall campaign of his freshman year as a Bulldog."
During the fall season, Nate Jessup and Rufie Fessler tied for low scoring average at 71.92 for the four tournaments. Freshman Troix Tonkham make an immediate positive impact averaging 72.75.
The Warrior Wave Intercollegiate concluded the Bulldog's fall season. The Fresno State men's golf team tees off its spring season on Feb. 11, 2013 at the Farms Collegiate Invitational hosted by the University of San Diego.
