FRESNO, Calif. - The men's golf team heads to the Central Coast to participate in the Lamkin Grip Match Play Championship hosted by Cal Poly. The format of the tournament, held at the 6,803-yard, par-72 Cypress Ridge Golf Club, is match play and the Bulldogs will open against Biola on Thursday. The `Dogs last competed in this tournamnet in 2010 where they lost to Sacramento State on the final hole of the championship match.Brian Sunker 2. Rufie Fessler 3. Jack Mulroy 4. Nate Jessup 5. Mulroy Wins WAC Golfer of the Week
Jack Mulroy, a junior from London, England, shot a 69 in his second round at the Fresno State Lexus Classic to help him finish in a tie for 37th with a 7-over, 223. The 69 was the best round for Mulroy this season who is in his first year with the Bulldogs. It is the first time that Mulroy has won a WAC golfer of the week or month award.
Patel Named Bulldog Student-Athlete of the Week
Senior Bhavik Patel's performance at the Alister MacKenzie Invitional earned him his second Student-Athlete of the Week honor. Patel shot a career low 8-under, 63 during the second round of the tournament in Fairfax, Calif. He also tied current PGA star Nick Watney and Todd Angel for the lowest round during head coach Mike Watney's 34 years at Fresno State.
Success On and Off the Greens
Along with his success on the golf course last year, senior Brian Sunker also excelled in the classroom which led to him being named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70-percent of his team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships and have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I.
Mike Watney is in his 34th season as the head coach of Fresno State men's golf and is looking to add to his already Hall of Fame résumé. In his career, Watney has produced 29 All-Americans and 18 Academic All-Americans, led his teams to 13 conference championships and named conference Coach of the Year nine times, most recently in 2010.
