FRESNO, Calif.-- The Fresno State men's golf team take on Cal Poly in their first match play of the season on March 28-29.

In their previous four tournaments the 'Dogs participated in stroke play, where each golfer accumulated strokes over the course of 18-holes. However, in their upcoming tournament the Bulldogs will participate in match play.

In the game of match play, each hole is a separate competition and the player with the fewest strokes on an individual hole wins that hole. The player winning the most holes wins the match.

In this particular style of play, the competition is directly player vs. player where each player faces one opponent in which they must beat.

The Cal Poly Match Play Championship will be the Bulldog's fifth tournament of the spring season. The 'Dogs will compete on Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande, Calif.

Following the Bulldog's past two tournaments, the 'Dogs took home two consecutive second place titles and are now ranked 61st according to GolfStat.com.

Among the Bulldog lineup is Rufie Fessler, Troix Tonkham, Nate Jessup, Johnny Partridge, and Jack Mulroy.

Freshman Tonkham captured his first individual title at the Bandon Dunes Championship where he fired six-under par, 210 (70-71-69). Senior Fessler trailed by three strokes and took second place at 213 (75-69-69).
