FRESNO, Calif. -- Men's golf head coach Mike Watney announced that Clovis, Calif. native Russell Takeuchi has signed a National Letter of Intent to play golf at Fresno State in the fall of 2013.
"I'm delighted that Russell is my last recruit before I retire," head coach Mike Watney said. "I have no doubt that Russell will play great golf and graduate with honors while representing the university in a manner that will bring pride to all the Bulldog faithful."
Takeuchi is an All-League player and holds a 73.4 stroke average. The Eagle Scout played golf at Clovis West High School where his team won the Valley Championship.
Along with holding an undefeated record in high school matches, Takeuchi won the Len Ross Championship, placed second in the Valley Individual and the Area Championship, and qualified for the upcoming Southern Regional in Pasadena, Calif.
Recently, Takeuchi was awarded the Pursuing Victory With Honor Award given by Clovis West High School. The award goes to the top athlete in the school that portrays the characteristics of a leader, exemplifying the core values, staying humble while winning, showing great sportsmanship, and representing the school in a classy manner.
"He is a great golfer, but he is so much more," Watney said. "This young man will be a shining example of how a great local star can stay at home and make an impact at Fresno State."
