Men's Golf Ranked as One of the Best by Golf Digest
Aug. 13, 2007 FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State men's golf team was ranked as one of the top 50 schools in the nation by the September issue of Golf Digest magazine. The rankings were based on mathematical computations with no value judgments ranking the top colleges for golf and academics out of 1,300 NCAA golf teams. Fresno State ranked 43 on the list and is the only team from the Western Athletic Conference to make the list. There are five criteria that form the basis of the rankings: a college golf team's adjusted scoring average, player growth while on the team, academics, climate and coaches/facilities in the nation. The team average spans the four most recent seasons with Fresno State ranking in the top ten-10 percent with 73.47. The Bulldogs are also ranked in the top-20 percent in Climate and facilities/coaches. "I'm proud to be on this list," said head coach Mike Watney. "Obviously, Golf Digest has noticed the consistency of the program and the quality of the players who have come from Fresno State. I have no doubt that this year's team will keep up the tradition." Mike Watney is going into his 30th season as the men's head coach for the Fresno State golf program. Throughout his time at Fresno State his squads have captured 13 conference championships and have had 29 all-time NCAA appearances. He has also helped to produce 37 All-Americans and 16 All-American scholars that have been named under him.
