FRESNO, Calif. - Men's golf head coach Chad Spencer revealed the 2014-15 schedule on Thursday, which features the Bulldogs' first home-hosted tournament in the fall semester since 2005.
"Again this season we have a great mix of tournaments on the schedule," said Spencer. "But overall, a very challenging one, we will need to bring our best for each event. I expect us to be up for the challenge and ready to compete."
The Fresno State men's golf team has 11 regular season tournaments planned throughout the academic year, playing in five over the course of the fall semester, and then six more in spring, leading into the Mountain West Championships in Tucson, Ariz.
Two tournaments lay ahead of the 'Dogs before they host the Nick Watney Invite on Sept. 29-30, starting with a season opening trip to the Midwest.
Fresno State tee's off the season at the Wolverine Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor at the UM Golf Course. The next week, Fresno State will be back in California for the St. Mary's College Invite, Sept. 15-16, at the Bayonet and Blackhorse golf course.
A busy September will conclude at Fresno's own Sunnyside Country Club, Sept. 29-30. The Nick Watney Invite will be the Bulldogs first tournament at Sunnyside CC since 2011 when they finished sixth, led by ex-Bulldog Bhavik Patel who fired a three-day total 217, one-over par.
After playing three tournaments in four weeks, the Bulldogs will have three weeks off to prepare for the Bill Cullum Invite, Oct. 20-21, hosted by Cal State Northridge at Woodranch Country Club. The fall schedule will wrap up in Stockton at the Pacific Invite, held Oct. 31-Nov. 2.
The spring schedule kicks off with three tournaments in three weeks, starting with a trip to Hawai'i, Feb. 18-20. Fresno State is set to compete at the John Burns Invite, hosted by the University of Hawai'i at the Wailua Golf Course. A week later, Feb. 23-24, the 'Dogs will be at Valencia Country Club for the Jones Invite that is hosted by Pepperdine. The three-week stretch caps off at the Del Walker Invite in Long Beach, March 2-3.
The last three tournaments of the season are the Duck Invite (March 23-24) at the Eugene Country Club, followed by the El Macero Classic (April 10-12) at El Macero Country Club and the BYU Cougar Classic (April 24-25) at Riverside Country Club.
"This will be an exciting year for Bulldog Golf," added Spencer. "With three incoming freshman joining some veteran experience, we look to improve and be a more consistent force in the Mountain West Conference."
Spencer will lean on his veteran experience to come from senior Keenan Nelson, who led the team as a junior with the lowest scoring average, 73.48 over 23 rounds. He posted as season-low of 68 at the OGIO UC Santa Barbara Intercollegiate. Nelson fired a three-day score of nine-over par, 222 (75-70-77), to close his 2013 campaign at the Mountain West Championships at the Tucson National Golf Course.
The Mountain West will host the 2015 MW Championships on May 1-3 at the same location, Tucson National Golf Course, with Spencer and his 'Dogs having their sights on moving up the leaderboard.
