FRESNO, Calif. - Senior Nick Watney (Dixon, Calif.) has been ranked No. 2 in the nation in the latest edition of Golf World Magazine's collegiate golf rankings, released Fiday. Watney has posted three wins and 13 Top 10 finishes this past season. Above him, ranked No. 1, lies D.J Trahan from Clemson who has set the school single-season marks in wins, and sub-70 rounds.
"It's hard to imagine Nick matching what he did last season, but he's off to a great start," said head coach Mike Watney. Watney averaged 70.53 for his 45 competitive rounds last year, obliterating the Fresno State one-year scoring average record that he set in 2001. Watney broke par 30 times, including rounds of 63, 64, 65 and 66. He also finished third among 141 players at the NCAA West Regional and sixth among 156 players at the NCAA Tournament. Watney also went 3-0 against last season's No. 1, Graeme McDowell of UAB.
"I need to try and be patient and not worry to much about the ranking, just worry about helping the team. It's just golf. If someone worries about the ranking system, then it would distract their game." said Nick Watney.
Watney's preseason ranking is pushing him off to a great start this season. He recently joined four other teammates in the Topy Cup Tournament held in Japan last week, where he finished first with a score of 203 (70-65-68). One of the players Watney beat out in Japan is No. 1-ranked D.J. Trahan of Clemson. In fact, Watney is currently undefeated against Trahan and has been for the past couple of seasons, having beat him at the U.S Amateur and the NCAA finals and tying him at the All-American Classic.
