FRESNO, Calif.-- The men's golf team tees off its 2012-13 fall season on Monday, Sept. 24 at the St. Mary's College Invitational. The two-day tournament, hosted by St. Mary's College, will be played on both Bayonet and Blackhorse golf courses in Monterey, Calif.

The 'Dogs have seven returners, including a redshirt freshman as well as three newcomers this season. The returning Bulldogs improved in the offseason and the talented newcomers are pushing them to be even better.

"We are coming off a year that had us playing a lot of first year guys," head coach Mike Watney said. "Our practices have been so much better than last year."

The 'Dogs lineup includes Jack Mulroy, who shot 65 twice in qualifying, Nate Jessup, who fired a 63 in qualifying, Rufie Fessler, Troix Tonkham, and Keenan Nelson.

"I would bet my bottom dollar that we will be much improved from last season," Watney said. "Does that mean that the new guys will crack the lineup and elevate the team? Or does it mean that the veterans are a year wiser and have done this summer what it takes to elevate their games to the next level? I'm sure that a round or two will be all it takes to realize that last year's level of play won't crack the lineup this year."

The 'Dogs face 15 teams including Oregon, who was a final four team in last year's NCAA Finals and the 2011 St. Mary's College Invitational champions. The 'Dogs will also play against Kansas State, Kentucky, Sacramento State, San Francisco, St. Mary's, and UC Irvine.

This is the third year the St. Mary's College Invitational will be held at the par-72, 7,104-yard Bayonet and the par-72, 7,024-yard Blackhorse golf courses. These two courses have become popular for public and championship use and are also ranked high amongst the best golf courses on the Monterey peninsula.

"I anticipate a good year where we will be contending for the Mountain West Championship and returning to the NCAA Tournament," Watney said.
