FRESNO, Calif. --
The Fresno State men's golf team travels to Fairfax, Calif. to play in the two-day Alister MacKenzie Invitational on Monday, Oct. 15.
The Alister MacKenzie Invitational is hosted by California, who is ranked No. 1.
"The Cal tournament will be a big test. Cal is number one in the country," head coach Mike Watney said. "What a great opportunity for the Bulldogs, but there are 16 teams and there are no slouches in the group. A top-five Bulldog finish would be fantastic in this field. There is no doubt we can do it, but it will take a full five-man effort."
The two-day tournament will be held at Meadow Club where the Bulldogs will also face MW foes Colorado State and San Diego State.
The 'Dogs have great history at Meadow Club and hope to generate more history at this tournament. In past years, three different Bulldogs shot a 65 or better on this course.
"Our first tournament showed that our results will be better this year but it didn't quite reflect the quality of our practices," Watney said. "This is a good team. Last year's first year players have much improved and we've added four new players."
"Junior Nate Jessup has stood toe-to-toe with Nick Watney and shown that he can stay with him and even knock it past him on occasion," Watney said. "Freshman Troix Tonkham was so cool in his first tournament and tied for 10th. He seemed like a seasoned veteran. We expect big things from Troix in the next four years. Senior Rufie Fessler is leading like a senior should lead. Those three have grabbed the top spots, but there are several other guys who will play and even contend for our top spots."
