FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State finished up play at the Blue-Gray Tennis Classic with a 4-1 loss to 24th-ranked Florida State on Saturday in Montgomery, Ala.

The Bulldogs (8-4) went 1-2 at the annual tournament, which historically has featured some of the nation's top teams. Fresno State opened with an upset of No. 15 Harvard before falling in the quarterfinals to No. 56 Tulsa.

"Today was not our best performance, but overall I was happy with the way we played in the tournament," head coach Jay Udwadia said. "The win over Harvard was really great for our guys, and there is no shame in losing to Florida State. They are definitely a top 20 team."

The Seminoles (9-4) started fast, easily winning at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles to grab an early 1-0 lead. Jakub Cech and Sergiu Modoc, who entered with a 6-2 dual match record, were defeated by 60th-ranked Jeff Groslimond and Chris Westerhof by a score of 8-1.

In singles, things didn't go much better for the Bulldogs. The team's only singles victory came at No. 3, where Charles Irie continued his stellar play this spring with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Jeff Groslimond. The sophomore improved to 10-2 in duals with and 12-5 overall.

At No. 1, Cech was in the middle of a potential upset when the Seminoles clinched the match win. He had split sets with 83rd-ranked Mat Cloer and was tied at 1-1 in the third when his match was suspended.

Fresno State now takes a few days off before returning to competition on March 20. The Bulldogs will host No. 23 Texas Tech on Sunday at noon at the Wathen Tennis Center.
