'Dogs Go 1-1 in Doubleheader

    BOISE, Idaho - The No. 26 Fresno State men's tennis team went 1-1 in its doubleheader in Boise, Idaho on Saturday. The team fell to No. 37 Boise State, 4-3, and defeated Utah State, 7-0, at the Appleton Tennis Center in Boise, Idaho.

    The Bulldogs (13-3, 4-0 WAC) earned the doubles point over Broncos (18-6, 1-0 MW) in a 2-1 decision to gain the advantage leading into singles competition. No. 1 doubles duo, Remi Boutillier and Francis Alcantara opened the day with an 8-4 defeat over Nathan Sereke and James Meredith. The Bulldogs clinched the doubles point at No. 2 where David Ayoun and Zachary Leslie bested Damian Hume and Scott Sears, 8-6.

    The Broncos fought back in singles play clinching the team win with four consecutive victories. Senior Jean-Charles Diame, senior David Ayoun, junior Zachary Leslie and freshman Reid DeLaubenfels suffered losses at the three, four, five and six spots.

    The Bulldogs earned two singles wins after the match was clinched. At No. 1 singles, 28th-ranked singles player Alcantara bested the Broncos' No. 56 Meredith, 3-6, 6-1, (10-8). At the No. 2 spot, 48th-ranked Boutillier finished the match off strong for the `Dogs beating No. 63 Hume, 6-4, 6-3.

    The Bulldogs continued their doubleheader in Boise, Idaho with another Western Athletic Conference win against Utah State, 7-0. The `Dogs have improved their undefeated streak in WAC play to 5-0.

     

     

    The Bulldogs (14-3, 5-0 WAC) earned the doubles point over the Aggies (4-9, 0-2 WAC) with wins at the No. 1 and 2 positions. Alcantara and Boutillier defeated Sven Poslusny and Marcus Fritz, 8-4, at No. 1 singles. deLaubenfels and Diame bested Lenny and Andrew Whiting, 8-2, at No. 2.

    In singles, the Bulldogs swept the Aggies at all six positions. At No. 1 singles, No. 28 Boutillier defeated Poslusny, 6-2, 6-1. At the No. 2 spot, No. 48 Francis Alcantara bested Fritz, 6-1, 6-2. Diame defeated Fredrik Petersen, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3.

    At No. 4 deLaubenfels beat Matt Sweet, 6-4, 6-4, and freshman Sai Kartik Nakireddi defeated Lenny Whiting, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 5 singles. Freshman Jeremy Quiroz beat Nate Ballam, 4-6, 7-5, 10-4, at No. 6.

    The `Dogs travel to San Luis Obispo, Calif. to face Cal Poly on Thursday, April 5, at 11 a.m.
