NAPA, Calif. --- The Fresno State men's tennis team finished the 2013 Silverado College Tennis Invitational with a team best 11-7 record combining singles and doubles. The Bulldogs were awarded overall best team record and freshman John Darmstaedter earned the best singles record of the weekend award at 3-0 with the least games lost.
Second -year head coach Evan Austin was just impressed with how his team started off their fall season.
"Overall it was a very successful weekend for our guys, "said head men's tennis coach Evan Austin. " Our newcomers should take a great deal of confidence from going a combined 9-0 in singles play. We also went unbeaten in three-set matches, which is something I am personally very excited about."
The Bulldogs won 3-of-4 singles matches on the final day of the Invite in Napa. All three newcomers grabbed wins over Arizona in singles play and finished the tournament with a 3-0 record. Darmstaedter beat Naoki Takeda in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-4. Adriaan DuToit went to three sets with Sumeet Shinde, winning 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 and Ethan Lopez beat Mario Urquidi, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
Felipe Fritz dropped his singles match to Kieren Thompson, 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles play, Fritz and Darmstaedter fell 8-2 to Oklahoma State's Lucas Gerch and Vasili Caripi. DuToit and Lopez fell 8-6 to Trevor Horstmann and Nathan Roper.
"We are looking forward to getting back to work next week and continuing to make improvements," added Austin.
Fresno State has one week off before hosting its annual Bulldog Invitational at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center, Sept. 27-29.
