Siwy Continues to Roll at All-American
Oct. 9, 2008
FRESNO, Calif. - Bulldog Rudolf Siwy continued his roll through the ITA All-American Championship Thursday in Tulsa, Okla.
Siwy dominated the opening two rounds of the tournament, beating two top-ranked opponents with seeming ease. The senior advanced to the main draw after winning three straight matches in the qualifying rounds of the tournament Oct. 6-8.
Siwy opened the day with a match against No. 3 Daniel Vallverdu of Miami. Siwy had no problem with Vallverdu, picking up the victory in two-straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the second round.
Siwy returned to the court later in the day to face his second Atlantic Coast Conference opponent of the day, Sanam Singh of Virginia. Siwy continued solid play winning the first set, 6-4, in what head coach Jay Udwadia described as a "physical match." Singh fought back to win the second set in a tiebreaker to force a third set. With the third set tied at 1-1, Singh was forced to retire the match due to injury, giving Siwy the victory 6-4, 6-7(1), 1-1(ret.) and a spot in the Round of 16 on Friday.
"It was a good day for Rudy said Udwadia. "It is nice to have someone represent Fresno State in the round of 16 in this prestigious tournament."
Siwy takes the court Friday to face No. 11 Steven Moneke of Ohio State in the round of 16.
