Jan. 31, 2006
FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State Senior Sergiu Modoc was named the XBox Live WAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week Tuesday, after a strong performance over the weekend. The 6-foot-2 native of Yorba Linda, Calif., clinched the Bulldogs 4-3 victory over the San Francisco Dons with a gutsy win Sunday at the Wathen Tennis Center.
Modoc and teammate Sam Gibbs began the day with a dominating 8-4 doubles win in which the 'Dogs led 6-0 at one juncture of the match. Then in singles, with the team scores knotted at 3-3, Modoc showed tremendous leadership and determination to finish off USF's Falko Huettenberger 6-3 in the second set. In the first set of that match, Modoc and Huettenberger went to the tiebreaker, trading points until Modoc won 14-12. Modoc is now 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles in the 2006 dual match season.
"Serg really showed his leadership there in the end," said Udwadia. "He came up with a big win to secure the victory for us."
The Fresno State men's tennis team returns to action when it hosts the Princeton Tigers, Friday, Feb. 3 at 4 p.m. at the Wathen Tennis Center.
