Bulldog Doubleheader Set for Saturday
Feb. 5, 2009
FRESNO, Calif. - No. 40 Fresno State sets its sights on a pair of Big West foes this Saturday when it hosts a doubleheader against 68th-ranked UC Irvine at 11 a.m. and UC Davis at 3 p.m. at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs are coming off a week in which they recorded two victories by defending their home court with a 6-1 win over Cal Poly and beating a 50th-ranked SMU team 4-3, and the Bulldogs are holding strong in the rankings at No. 40. Sophomore Rikus de Villiers had an exceptional week for Fresno State, recording two wins in singles, including an upset over 118th-nationally ranked Artem Baradach of SMU, and he also won three doubles matches with his partner Remi Boutillier.
First up for the Bulldogs will be UC Irvine, which has a deceiving 0-2 record. Both losses were ranked opponents - No. 20 Pepperdine and 65th-ranked BYU. The match with BYU was especially close, with the Cougars narrowly beating the Anteaters 4-3.
The latter portion of the doubleheader will pit the Bulldogs against UC Davis. The Aggies opened their dual season with three matches in three days last weekend. UC Davis went 1-2 over that weekend with its lone win against Portland State and losses to Portland and Idaho.
The Bulldogs will next travel to Seattle to face off against a pair of Pac-10 opponents in Washington and Oregon. Fresno State will return to the Wathen Tennis Center for three matches from Feb. 27-March 1 against San Diego State (Feb. 27 at 5 p.m.), Arizona (Feb. 28 at 1 p.m.) and Middle Tennessee State (March 1 at 2 p.m.).
