About the Competition
UC Irvine dropped off the national rankings this week after being previously ranked at No. 75 last week. The Anteaters stand at 2-7 this season with wins over the 67th-ranked Texas A&M Corpus Christi, and most recently UC San Diego. Sophomore Jonathan Hammel has played four positions through nine matches for the 'Eaters in 2014 with a combined 3-0 record between Nos. 3 and 6.
SDSU (2-2) is 1-0 in MW play after defeating Nevada, 4-3, on Jan. 18, and has won 10-straight regular season conference dual matches going back to the 2012 season. The Aztecs went a perfect 6-0 in regular season MW play a year ago, en route to earning the regular season conference championship outright. Junior Thorsten Bertsch is ranked No. 69 in the nation, has a 2-1 record this dual season in the No. 1 singles slot, and is 9-4 overall in 2013-14.
Matched Moved to Sierra Racquet Club
The Bulldogs home opener against No. 75 UC Irvine on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 1 p.m., has been moved from Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center to the Sierra Racquet Club. As originally schedule, the 'Dogs will also host No. 53 San Diego State for their first conference dual of the season at the Sierra Racquet Club on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 12 p.m. The Sierra Racquet Club is a 22 court facility located in northwest Fresno. Both the men's and women's Mountain West Tennis Tournaments will be played there this spring (Apr. 24-27).
Komati Named Fresno State Student-Athlete of the Week
Freshman Eric Komati was named Fresno State Sysco Student-Athlete of the week on Feb. 3, after winning three matches for the Bulldogs last weekend. He took his doubles match in the No. 2 spot over the Vandals and earned his singles point on court five in straight sets, helping Fresno State to a 6-1 win over Idaho on Saturday. The Sao Paulo, Brazil native then went on to win his singles point against No. 51 Oregon in the No. 3 spot.
Austin welcomes the addition of four new Bulldogs to the roster this year. Freshman John Darmstaedter, Alexandros Georgios Vakouftsis, Eric Komati and Ethan Lopez will join the three returners for their first dual season with Fresno State this spring. Darmstaedter and Lopez joined the 'Dogs in August, 2013 and competed in all the fall tournaments while Komati and Vakouftsis are new additions this spring.
Austin Enters Second Season
Head coach Evan Austin enters his second season at the helm of the Fresno State men's tennis program. In his first year at the reigns, Austin led the Bulldogs to a fifth place finish in their first year in the Mountain West with a 2-4 record. Austin also guided the 'Dogs to their highest ITA ranking of No. 50, which came on Jan. 3, 2013. Under Austin's leadership one Bulldog was named to All-Mountain West singles team at the conclusion of season.
