FRESNO, Calif. - No. 26 Fresno State's already-formidable schedule received another upgrade by qualifying for the ITA National Team Indoors Sweet 16 and drawing defending national champion and top-ranked USC on Friday in Charlottesville, Va.
The Bulldogs are 7-1 on the season and earned a berth for National Indoors by knocking off then-No. 12 Texas A&M in College Station, Texas, for the first qualifying round, then swept then-No. 34 Rice, 4-0, the following day.
Fresno State boasts the No. 83 singles player in the country, David Ayoun. The freshman from Ceteil, France, is 13-3 on the year and a perfect 6-0 in the spring portion of the season.
The Trojans return five of the six players of their national championship lineup from a year ago. USC is currently 6-0 and have six singles players nationally ranked, including the No. 1 player in the country, Steve Johnson.
This will be the first meeting between the two schools since the Trojans picked up a 5-2 victory in 2007. Fresno State is 4-16 all-time against USC.
Trojan coach Peter Smith has a personal connection to the Bulldogs, as he was the Fresno State head coach from 1991-97 and led the 'Dogs to a No.6 final ranking in 1996.
Depending on the Sweet 16 results, the 'Dogs will face either No. 8 Texas or No. 9 Stanford on Saturday. Fresno State is guaranteed at least three matches against Top 25 opponents over the weekend.
