FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 26 Fresno State men's tennis team was named regular season Western Athletic Conference champions after beating Utah State, 7-0, on Saturday night.
The Bulldogs' won the title outright after defeating all of the conference opponents: New Mexico State, Utah State, Idaho, Hawai'i and Nevada. This is the second-straight season that the `Dogs have earned regular season champions.
"The team competed hard all season and we were fortunate enough to earn wins against our conference opponents," head coach Jay Udwadia said. "We still have a few matches left to play so we hope to finish strong before the conference tournament."
"I'm really glad we won the regular season WAC championship because it was one our goals, but the season isn't over and we still have a lot to accomplish," Boutillier said.
Ayoun also felt that it was important to keep focused throughout the rest of the season.
"Earning a conference title always feels great, especially winning outright," Ayoun said. "However, our main goal now is to win the WAC Tournament and I think earning the No. 1 seed will help us to accomplish that."
As WAC champions, the `Dogs earned the No. 1 seed for the WAC Championships April 26-29 in Las Cruces, N.M. The rest of the bracket which be determined after the rest of the teams complete WAC play.
