FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's and women's tennis teams hit the road this week for the 2003 WAC Tennis Tournament in Boise, Idaho. The championships kick off Friday at the Appleton Tennis Center in Boise, Idaho.
The women's team (13-7), the defending WAC champs, are the tournament's No. 1 seed. In Friday's 2 p.m. first round match, they will play eighth-seeded Hawai`i. The Rainbow Wahine defeated No. 9-seed San Jose State 4-0 in a play-in match Friday morning.
The 22nd-ranked Bulldogs have the highest national ranking of any conference team. They have won six in a row heading into the postseason. Fresno State is led by sophomore Chloe Carlotti, who has compiled a 27-7 (18-2 dual) singles record this year and is currently ranked No. 9 nationally.
The men's team (16-7) is the No. 3 seed and will play sixth-seeded Hawai`i on Friday at 9:30 a.m. Like the women, the men head into the postseason on fire, having won nine of their last 10. Fresno State, currently ranked 40th in the nation, is looking to avenge last year's first round WAC Tournament loss, the earliest exit in program history.
Rice, at No. 28, and SMU, at No. 38, are ranked above the Bulldog men's team in the national poll.
Semifinal matches come Saturday and the championship matches will be held Sunday.
