What's Coming Up
No. 46 Fresno State (13-8) heads to Houston this week for the WAC Tournament, which takes place Friday through Sunday at Rice University's Jake Hess Tennis Center. The fourth-seeded Bulldogs' will take on No. 5-seed Tulsa in the first round on Friday at 8:30 a.m. Fresno State, which is 9-1 all-time in WAC Tournament first round matches, has won the league title twice, the last coming in 1999 in San Diego.
What Just Happened
The Bulldogs wrapped up the regular season in style April 17-18 with two victories. On the 17th, Fresno State took out UC Irvine 5-2 behind strong performances by Nos. 4 and 6 singles. One day later, the Bulldogs played their most dramatic match of the season in topping Pacific 4-3. Charles Irie overcame fatigue, cramps and a dogged Vladimir Zdravkovic to win 7-6 (2), 4-6, 7-5 in the clinching match at No. 4 singles. It marked only the third time this year Fresno State lost the doubles point in a match but still rebounded to win.
WAC Tournament History
Fresno State has claimed two WAC titles in its history, one in 1996 and another in 1999. The Bulldogs have been the runner-up on three other occasions - 1993, '95 and '01. Under current head coach Brad Dancer, Fresno State has played in two conference tournaments. In 2001, the team lost in the first round and last year lost a heartbreaker in the semifinals to SMU.
All-Time vs. Tulsa
The Bulldogs are 3-1 all-time against Tulsa. The first meetings between the two schools came in 1998, when they traded off 4-3 victories. In 1999 and 2001, Fresno State came out on top, also by scores of 4-3. The Bulldogs are 2-0 all-time against TU in WAC Tournament matches.
Perfect Home Record
Fresno State's two wins over UC Irvine and Pacific April 17-18 capped an unbeaten home record. The Bulldogs went 11-0 at the Wathen Tennis Center this year, the first time since 1999 they did not lose a home match. Since the opening of the facility in 1998, Fresno State has gone 68-8 for a winning percentage of .895.
