The Week Ahead
The Bulldogs close out the dual season this week with two home duals against Stanford and UC Davis. Fresno State moved to 4-3 at home last week against Cal Poly and will look to continue that success over the week. Juniors Greg Gifford and Cody Parker both have a shot to reach the 30-win plateau as well this season, and wins this week will help the two wrestlers to reach that mark during the regional tournament and the NCAAs. The first dual this week begins on Wednesday, when Fresno State looks to win its second straight dual over the Cardinal at 7 p.m., and then hosts the Aggies at 7 p.m. on Saturday evening.
Home Sweet Home
Fresno State moved back over .500 at home, winning 28-19 against Cal Poly on Feb. 7. In what was a very short affair, Fresno State forfeited two weights, and Cal Poly gave up three to start the teams off with only five matches to wrestle. The Bulldogs got the edge on those matches as well, as true freshman Cory Borges started the night with a 15-8 decision over John Hanks, and Garrett Spooner grabbed a 15-7 major decision over Cal Poly's Blake Gaughran. The third win for the Bulldogs came from 184-pound Greg Gifford, who won a tight 3-1 decision in what was a good week for the junior. Gifford also got his 25th win of the season in the Bulldogs' second dual of the week, upsetting No. 9 C.B. Dollaway on the road against Arizona State.
All-California Tourney Time
Fresno State got their first taste of a tournament format since
December this past weekend, and took advantage of it, finishing second
at the California Collegiate Invitational. The Bulldogs' Greg Gifford
and Cody Parker each won individual titles, and Fresno State placed
eight wrestlers in the tournament. The Bulldogs also swept the individual awards. Heavyweight Cody Parker was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament, winning three straight matches including a fall of Eric Parker in the championship match. Garrett Spooner also picked up the Coach Hadder Award for most pins in the shortest time, making quick work of the wrestleback bracket after a close loss in the first round, making three pinfalls in 9:40 to win the award.
