Hanna Howard begins her second season as an assistant coach with the Fresno State women's basketball program. She joined the Bulldogs prior to the 2012-13 season after two years at Utah State.
In her first season at Fresno State, Howard helped the Bulldogs reach the NCAA Tournament. Fresno State went 24-9 overall in 2012-13 and won the 2013 Reese's Mountain West Basketball Championship to secure the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
Howard, who helps direct the Bulldogs' defensive game plan, coached Fresno State into a team that hung its hat on playing pressure defense. The Bulldogs ranked No. 3 in the NCAA in steals with 12.9 per game, doing so while only fouling 12.1 times per game to rank No. 7 nationally for the fewest fouls committed per game. No other NCAA team ranked in the top 20 in both steals per game and fewest fouls.
Fresno State guards Ki-Ki Moore, Taylor Thompson and Rosie Moult ranked one, two and three in the Mountain West in steals, and the Bulldogs' 426 steals as a team set new school and Mountain West single-season records. Moore was named the 2012-13 Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year and Moult was named with her on the MW All-Defensive team.
Howard joined the Utah State coaching staff in the summer of 2010 and helped lead the Aggies to back-to-back WNIT appearances in her two seasons in Logan. In her last year at USU, Howard helped direct the Aggies to a school record 21 wins and senior forward Ashlee Brown was named the 2012 WAC Defensive Player of the Year.
Prior to joining Raegan Pebley's staff at Utah State, Howard spent three seasons (2007-10) as an assistant coach at UC San Diego. In her time at UCSD, the team made appearances in the NCAA Tournament each year and had an overall record of 77-22. The Tritons were ranked as high as No. 3 nationally during Howard's time at UCSD.
While at UCSD, Howard was involved in all aspects of coaching including recruiting, travel, scheduling and player development. She also oversaw the program's summer camps, scouting and video operations.
Prior to UCSD, Howard was a former standout at the University of Portland. A four-year letterwinner at Portland, Howard had her senior year cut short with a knee injury during the 2004-05 season. She graduated with a degree in organizational communication in the spring of 2005.
Howard earned her master's degree in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University, Irvine in February, 2010.
The former Hanna Seltzer married Marques Howard in August, 2009. Hanna and Marques welcomed their first child, Mason, in August 2011.
