FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's basketball team overcame a slow start with a couple of big runs to earn its 22nd win of the season. The Bulldogs defeated Utah State for the second time this season 78-60 on Saturday.
"I thought we played hard and I am very pleased with our effort," said head coach Adrian Wiggins. "In the beginning of the game Utah State had a great push, but we fought hard with that. As the game went on we played smarter and got better, which reflected in the score."
The `Dogs (22-4, 10-0 WAC) took control of the ball game with nine minutes remaining until half time with a 16-4 run. The Bulldogs kept the momentum going in the second half with an 11-4 run to cement their lead.
"Our pace has been off the past few games," said Wiggins. "Tonight, we didn't stop the clock a whole bunch and it kept running. Early in the game, we fouled on a couple shots. After that, until the end of the game, we didn't foul much on shots. There wasn't a lot of stoppage on the clock and that helped our pace."
Fresno State has now won 120 games by double figures under Wiggins. The Bulldogs have also defeated 8-of-10 WAC opponents by double digits in 2012. The `Dogs have won their last 11 games and 21 of the last 23 games.
Freshman Alex Sheedy recorded her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Her first double-double was earlier this season against Cal Poly. Sheedy also contributed a block.
Junior Rosie Moult led the `Dogs with 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Sophomore Ki-Ki Moore added 12 points, eight rebounds and led with six steals. Sophomore Taylor Thompson recorded five assists and eight points.
`Dogs fell behind early in the first half by as many as six points. Fresno State answered with a little 7-2 run to tie the game 16-16 with 11 minutes to play until halftime.
The Bulldogs heated up halfway through the first half and took the lead with 9:32 left on the clock after Sheedy made a layup off a pass from Bree Farley. A 16-4 run gave the Bulldogs a 12 point lead over Utah State with 4:28 left in the half.
Moult finished the half leading all scorers with 13 points making 3-of-7 3-pointers. She also led the team with five rebounds. Moore contributed eight first half points and led with four steals. The Bulldogs led 39-30 at halftime.
The second half opened with an 11-4 run by the `Dogs extending their lead 50-34 over the Aggies with 15:10 left to play.
Fresno State's lead grew to 20 late in the second half. The Bulldogs largest lead of the game was 24 with 2:33 left to play. The `Dogs remain the only undefeated team in conference play and are three games ahead of Utah State, who is in second place.
"We've had a couple really good games against Utah State," said Wiggins. "They want to win a WAC championship, but we want to do that too. There is a lot of motivation for both teams."
