FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State women's basketball celebrated senior day with a 79-43 win over New Mexico State. The 2012 WAC regular season Champions head to the conference Tournament with a 25-5 overall mark. The `Dogs earned the No. 1 seed in the WAC Tournament after finishing the WAC season 13-1.
The Bulldogs honored seniors Veronica Wilson and Blakely Goldberg prior to tip off. Over the past two seasons, the seniors have guided the `Dogs to a 50-13 record, a WAC regular season Title, a WAC Tournament title and an NCAA tournament appearance.
"First, I want to congratulate our seniors on the great season and careers they have had," said Adrian Wiggins. "I knew they were capable of having a great year and seeing them have a great year is rewarding as a coach."
Goldberg finished the afternoon with 10 points, four rebounds and two steals, while Wilson had seven points and grabbed a rebound.
The Bulldogs shot 48 percent making 32-of-66 shots and made 11 treys against the Aggies. Moult shot 50 percent from the field making 8-of-16 shots including five from 3-point range. Moult scored a team-high 21 points and grabbed five rebounds. She also recorded three assists and a steal.
"We had good effort from the team," said Wiggins. "I thought we played hard. We had a lot of effort on the defensive side and a lot of steals. We kept the pace and tempo where we wanted, which is important coming into the WAC Tournament."
The `Dogs outrebounded New Mexico State 39-37 and Moore snagged a team-high seven rebounds. Fresno State also forced the Aggies to turn the ball over 21 times and the Bulldogs converted those turnovers into 33 points.
Fresno State opened the game with a 15-4 run, which included two early 3-pointers from Moult. With 10:20 left in the half the Bulldogs had a double figure lead over New Mexico State.
The `Dogs maintained double digit lead for most of the first half and their largest lead of the half was 13 points with 1:41 left.
Moult drained a 3-pointer as the clock ran out heading to half time. The junior lead all scorers with 14 first half points and four rebounds as the `Dogs led New Mexico State 31-19 at half. Also grabbing four rebounds in the first half was Taylor Thompson and Ki-Ki Moore.
The Bulldogs pulled ahead with 12-0 run and led the Aggies 62-27 with 9:09 left on the clock. Fresno State held the Aggies to six points through the first 11 minutes of the second half. `Dogs outscored New Mexico State 48-24 in the latter half of the game. In the latter half of the game, the Bulldogs shot 55 percent.
"Overall, I felt like we started shooting the ball better," said Wiggins. "It's a good time of the year to start shooting well."
Largest lead of the game was by 38 points in the second half. Freshman Robin Draper came in off the bench and recorded four points including a 3-pointer from the left side of the arc.
Fresno State finished the regular season with an overall mark of 25-5 and conference record of 13-1. The Bulldogs also concluded the year with an impressive 13-1 record at the Save Mart Center.
"We have some big games ahead of us," said Wiggins. "Ultimately, it's going to come down to who executes the best and stays focused."
The Bulldog hit the road next week for the WAC Tournament March 7-11 in Las Vegas. The No. 1 seeded `Dogs take on the No. 8 seed on Wednesday, March 7 at 6 p.m.
