FULLERTON, Calif. --- The Fresno State women's basketball team won its first road game of the season with a 68-57 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Saturday afternoon at Titan Gym.
The Bulldogs (2-1) scored the first basket of the game with a three from junior Alex Sheedy and maintained the lead until the final buzzer.
"We have talked a lot about how to play on the road, and this was a great example of that," said head coach Raegan Pebley. "You've got to grind road wins out, earn every point, every stop, every possible opportunity to gain possession and get a score on the board. You aren't going to get anything just coming to you."
Four Bulldogs scored in double figures against the Titans, including sophomore center Jacinta Vandenberg with a career-high 15 points which marked a team-high for Fresno State.
"She (Vandenberg) is just growing even more as a mature, confident player, I am just excited to see her grow," said Pebley. "There are going to be ups and downs, but I think she's built her confidence on such a solid foundation of hard work and fundamentals that when she hits those downward steps she's going to bounce right back up."
Sheedy and Taylor Thompson added a season-high 14 points each for the Bulldogs, while junior guard Robin Draper had 11 points in the victory. Thompson also had a team-high seven rebounds for the 'Dogs.
The Bulldogs forced 21 turnovers in a strong defensive effort led by Bree Farley and Moriah Faulk with three steals apiece. Faulk shot 4-9 from the field and also recorded a career-high nine points in her third start for the Bulldogs.
"I think we had some great leadership from our players, getting done what needs to get done," said Pebley. "Fullerton did a great job, they made some great adjustments, and we saw another game of almost all zone. I'm glad to see that our offense had better flow and rhythm to it with 40 minutes of zone."
The Bulldogs shot 44.8 percent from the field in the second half and went a perfect 4-for-4 from the line- outlasting the Cal State Fullerton for the 68-57 victory.
"I am really proud of how a young team responded, and I really love how our captains led today," added Pebley. "From start to finish, from when we started our road trip to now celebrating this victory with some awesome alumni- we have four of the fab-five here with us today."
The Bulldogs continue their four-game road stand at Washington State next Friday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. PT.
