Bulldogs Improve to 3-0

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's basketball team improved its record to 3-0 for the third time in the last five seasons as they beat Sacramento State 74-68 Sunday afternoon at the Hornets' Nest.
"Anytime you come on the road and get a win you have to be excited," Fresno State coach Adrian Wiggins said. "As a coach I learned a lot about our team tonight. We became a better defensive team tonight despite the score."
Jaleesa Ross led the Bulldogs with 19 points and four assists while Bailey Amundsen had 12 points and a team-best nine rebounds. Taja Edwards had a career-high 11 points and eight rebounds. Ashley Walker also provided a spark off the bench as she had seven points and seven rebounds in 12 minutes of play.
It was the play Edwards and Walker that provided a spark for the `Dogs in the win. Edwards also had two steals and deflected many basketballs while Walker had one steal.
"They were very energetic," Wiggins said. "They came off the bench and gave us some defensive and rebounding effort. They ran the floor hard. They attacked the basket hard and that really kept us going tonight."
Fresno State shot 40 percent from the field and out rebounded the Hornets 44-33. The Bulldog defense forced Sacramento State into 16 turnovers.
Other than a 2-0 deficit to open the game, Fresno State led the entire way for the second straight game. In the first half, the Bulldogs led 27-17 with 8:48 to play after a layup by Marnique Arnold. The lead was extended to 17 at 38-21 after a 3-pointer by LaShay Fears and the Bulldogs led 41-23 at the break.
The Bulldog's biggest lead of the game was 22 at 61-39 after two free throws by Walker with9:49 to play in the game. The Hornets then went on a run and cut the Fresno State lead to five at 69-64 with 1:12 to play and 72-68 with 10 seconds remaining.
With seven seconds left in the game Amundsen sunk two free throws to seal the win.
Fresno State returns to the court on Friday, November 28 when they play Charlotte of the Atlantic 10 in the SMU Tournament. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. The Bulldogs will then play Saturday against SMU or Sam Houston State.
