Fresno State Falls to No. 4 Stanford, 86-54
Dec. 28, 2013
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Alex Sheedy had 15 points and 11 rebounds, but Fresno State (6-5) couldn't quite handle Chiney Ogwumike and fell to No. 4 Stanford 86-54 on Saturday night.
Up four points midway through the first half, The Cardinal used an 11-0 run during 5 minutes of shutout defense to stake itself to a 33-18 lead over the Bulldogs with 5:54 left in the first half.
Fresno State never recovered.
Stanford led 43-31 at halftime to block any spirited rally by Fresno State. The Cardinal outscored the Bulldogs 16-2 in the first five minutes of the second half, and stretched the lead to 33 points with 12 minutes remaining in the game.
Ogwumike scored 16 of her 20 points in the first half for Stanford (11-1), who was coming off a six-day holiday break, and playing for the first time since defeating then-No. 3 Tennessee 76-70 on Dec. 21. The rustiness showed for half of the first half before Ogwumike, who added 10 rebounds and three blocks, got going.
Stanford guard Amber Orrange had 15 points, six assists and three steals. Cardinal forward Taylor Greenfield added 18 points, and Bonnie Samuelson scored 14 points off the bench.
