FRESNO, Calif. - Head women's basketball coach Raegan Pebley announced the hiring of Ron Stewart and Hanna Howard to round out the Fresno State staff on Wednesday. Howard and Stewart join Danyelle Snelgro, who was hired in late April to complete the Bulldog coaching staff.
Stewart spent the last four years with the Nevada women's basketball team. In his first two seasons with the Wolf Pack, he served as an assistant coach and in 2010 he was promoted to the title of associate head coach.
"I have professionally respected Ron for a long time," said Pebley. "He is a true professional in every sense of the word. Ron's experience is extensive and will in no doubt be an asset to Fresno State Women's Basketball."
Prior to Nevada, Stewart spent 11 seasons as the head women's basketball coach at Western Michigan University. During his tenure with the Broncos, Stewart compiled a 159-169 overall record (.485) and a 101-77 mark in MAC play (.567). He coached 19 players to All-MAC honors, five honorable mention Kodak All-Americans and two MAC Players of the Year.
"I am very excited to join the staff and become a Bulldog," Stewart said. "I certainly have a familiarity with the program and a great deal of respect for what has gone on my four years in the same conference. What the previous staff did to put the team in place to win a championship each year that bodes well for the future. I have a respect for her coaching ability seeing what she has done at past universities with every element of the game. The women's game has grown and she has been a huge part of that growth."
At Western Michigan University, his teams made three WNIT appearances, including an Elite Eight appearance in 2004, and one NCAA Tournament Appearance. In addition, his team won the 2003 MAC Tournament.
Prior to his time at Western Michigan, Stewart served as an assistant men's coach at the University of Florida from 1990-96 where the 1994 team advanced to the NCAA Final Four. In addition, Stewart served as an assistant men's coach at Kansas State University from 1986-90 where the Wildcats participated in the NCAA Tournament every season from 1986-90 including an Elite Eight appearance in 1986.
Along with his collegiate coaching experience, Stewart assisted with practices and training camp at the 1995 USA Basketball World University Games, was an assistant coach and travel coordinator with Florida's foreign tour of Australia in 1993 and served as the head coach of the Superior Professional Basketball League from 1988-1989.
Stewart graduated from Indiana University in 1971 with a bachelor's degree in education and received his master's degree in education from Butler University in 1977.
Both Howard and Snelgro coached under Pebley at Utah State. Howard joined the Aggies coaching staff in the summer of 2010. She brought with her three years of coaching experience from UC San Diego (2007-2010).
"Coach Howard is a rising star in our profession," said Pebley. "She has a midas touch. Every program she has been a part of has taken a large step in its development and reached new levels of success. Her work ethic is unrelenting, she is detailed oriented, passionate about the development of young women on and off the court, and ultra competitive. It is truly an honor for our program to have her on board."
During Howard's three years as the first assistant at UC San Diego, the team made appearances in the NCAA Tournament each year and had an overall record of 77-22. The Tritons were ranked as high as No. 3 nationally during Howard's time at UCSD.
"I am so appreciative of the opportunity to be a part of Fresno State, which has such a long history of success," Howard said. "The Bulldog women's basketball program has sustained such a high level of play in recent years and I am looking forward to help build on that tradition. It is an honor to join Raegan here at Fresno State. I have so much respect for her on and off the court. She is not only a mentor for me professionally, but has also taught me so much about the balance of being a mom and wife in the coaching profession."
While at UCSD, Howard was involved in all aspects of coaching including recruiting, travel, scheduling and player development. She also oversaw the program's summer camps, scouting and video operations.
Prior to UCSD, Howard was a former standout at the University of Portland. A four-year letterwinner at Portland, Howard had her senior year cut short with a knee injury during the 2004-05 season. She graduated with a degree in organizational communication in the spring of 2005.
Howard earned her master's degree in coaching and athletic administration from UC San Diego in February, 2010. The former Hanna Seltzer married Marques Howard in August, 2009. Hanna and Marques welcomed their first child, Mason, in July.
